Error: 'Unable to submit your VAT return to HMRC. Invalid request.'

Check that the values and formatting are valid for submission to HMRC:

  • Box 1 + Box 2 must = Box 3.

  • Take the figures in boxes 3 and 4. Box 5 should be the figure for Box 3 minus Box 4.

📌 **Note:** If box 5 is negative, you do not need to state it as a negative figure — leave it as positive. HMRC's system is designed this way.

  • Boxes 6, 7, 8 & 9 must be rounded to the nearest pound (£).

The file cannot hold any formulas, as HMRC's system will not accept them. It also requires a single worksheet containing only the final nine boxes. Ensure values in the spreadsheet are to two decimal places only — Access Digital Tax will try to convert longer decimals but this can sometimes cause a submission error. HMRC's new system provides confirmation in a pop-up window rather than by email. Take a screenshot of this for your records.

Following this, if the issue remains then you would need to liaise with HMRC.

If this does not appear to be an issue with HMRC then our support team will need to investigate, run scripts or liaise with the hosting or development teams. For help contacting us, see our Get support in Access Digital Tax.
